Detroit and Smiths falls, the comparison, the parallels, it's media, politicians and businesses.

There as been references to smiths falls as been the little Chicago, I have heard this many times, so I beg to differ on that comparison, Smiths falls and all it's entrenched elite should consider their action have actually run this town into the ground similar to DETROIT. And they should not insult Chicago.

According to the local fun loving, co-operative media here, all is well, all is fine, and the local politicians are just great people...Of course, one who plays golf with them will never bite the hand that feed them, and that is what the EMC SMITHS FALLS is, a local mouth piece for propaganda.

So for the fun of it, I went downtown, one block, between two streets, and looked for myself if the area was as great as the media keeps on preaching.
I found 8 closed businesses on one, and 7 on the next, in a population of less than 9000, that is 15 in a 2 block radius. Now there is a hell of a lot more closed businesses, but you get the point. There is a pool in Smiths falls, when a new business opens, how long will it stay open, usually 3 months, you go shopping, and poof, one day it's gone. Not even a local pawn shop could survive, true they could buy a lot, but could not sell it...lol.

Why is this happening, well, the local social programs target our kids for welfare, local women's shelter targets young underage girls, to get more funding from the government, if a child is raised by the father, then the targeting of that child is increased, (all parents, especially fathers are bad, this policy is rampant, and talking from personal experience, God forbid your a loving father, you will be demonized), I was even told by someone high up in the local government that welfare is been seen as a viable economic answer to the towns problem.

In turn, we have increase drug abuse, teen crime, teen pregnancy, welfare as a way of life, lost education by our kids, a lost generation, and the EMC smiths falls and local area newspaper, says....all is well...It is so bad here, that people can no longer walk through the park at night...

So, that is what happens when the local media is complacent and does not do it's job, to report the truth. They know the social programs are out of control, invaded by corrupt self serving individuals, but instead of reporting it, to at least recognize there is a problem they just preach the good will of the corrupt and leave good families to fend for themselves.

And dare to fight back as a parent, in my case, a father, see what happens.... again, personal experiences...

That is why I am going to alberta, smiths falls has become a hole, sucking up kids for welfare. As for the closed buiness, u r right on. No jobs, no oportunity and the media in the area, "all is well".

There are definitely many challenges in Smiths Falls. We should look at the whole system there, from the Mayor to the Police!

I have taught in Smiths Falls. It is certainly a tough town. If the parents were more willing to encourage their kids to leave town and get more education, things might be different.

Well I live in Smiths Falls, and I can tell you that this post is a bit dramatic when you speak of how many business downtown are closed and when you say we can't even walk throughout the park at night. However the rest is true, something like 54% of the town was unemployed before Hersheys, Stanley Tools, and Rideau Regional closed down, leaving something like an additional 1000 people unemployed in the town of 9000. Drugs are a problem, coke and dope dealers are everywhere, some making huge profit, but the majority are just small time dealers. As for welfare, someone told me once that SF has the highest rate of welfare users to overall population in Canada, and I wouldn't doubt that it's true. The town has potential but the people in it need to make serious changes. All is not well here, and I agree with the person who said parents need to encourage their children to leave town and continue on with their education (and a lot need to do a better job parenting altogether)

I was not dramatic but realistic, the pictures of the side streets down town where taken by me, go there and see for yourself how many are closed.
I even had a "city counsellor" tell me the mayor(staples) use to go to Ottawa and tell the mayor there to send his welfare cases to smiths falls. Your right on with the drug problem, you have to be an incompetent police force not to close the small time dealer down, there is so many of them.

And I would not recommend anyone walk the parks alone at night, might not be central park but it is bad. Also in my personal experience and talking to other local parents, when you have social programs offering easy welfare to teens, its a recipe for disaster. Not only do these youths lose any chance at a prosperous future, but they increase crime, drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, generational welfare, so on...and that is the story of smiths falls, for now anyway. Now that staples is gone maybe thing will change.
Thank you all for the comments.
