A childs heart

Take away the TV, the console and the DVD
And give a child a stick to play in the mud,
To strike the waters edge
And you have given then joy.
Show them the prints of animals,
Make them listen to the sounds of the forest
And you have given them curiosity.
Help them to climb the first branch of a tree
And you have given them vision for the future.
Show them things other than commercialism,
Sign them songs, tell them stories,
Teach gentleness with small animals and other children
And you have given life filled with love and kindness.
The best part of sharing time with a child
Is they give back so much,
Bright eyes and question with no end,
Laughter at nothing and everything,
It will be time well spent and remembered.
And confidently in later years,
They will recall whom it was spent with.

Teachings from the Elders

Every morning and every evening
Give thanks to the Creator,
For the life within you and all life,
For the good things given to you and others.
Consider your thoughts and action of the past day,
And seek the courage and strength to be a better person.
Look for the things that will benefit all.
Treat every person with respect at all times.
No person should be made to feel put down by you.
Treat the Earth and all her aspect as your Mother.
Show deep respect for the belief of others.
Respect the wisdom of the Elders.
Always treat your guests with honour,
Give your best food, blanket, the best part of your house.
The hurt of one is the hurt of all.
The honour of one is the honour of all.
Observe moderation and balance in all things.
Listen and follow the guidance given to your heart.
Expect guidance to come in may form;
In prayer, in dreams, in times of quiet solitude,
Also in the words of Elders and Friends.

Mad world, Mad logic.

It is a mad world because of so many countries has the capability to destroy Mother Earth. Why so many would even think that, their security depends on the idea that destroying the Earth is a way to be safe, seem to be a mad situation to me. In addition, if this is not enough, they added chemical and biological weapons, which can do things to people so horrible, the worse horror movie would be a child cartoon compare to that reality.
I remember in the 70’s, the famous saying, “better be dead than red”. Where that came from I do not think anyone knows. Probably some propaganda devise by Nixon, (sarcasm). I use to think, ya but if your dead, what colour would be your family, children, wife, mother, father, grandparents. Everyone you leave behind will become red would they not? Life is always better than death.
Now let’s look at it from a native perspective. We survived the wars imposed on us, fought the residential school, we resisted the impositions of change to our history, and we where told our spirituality was devil worshiping, without anyone trying to understand or even look at what it was. Nations where eliminated from existence, millions where killed, by what would be considered inhuman war crimes by today’s standard. Unlike what history books and john wayne says, scalping did not come from us. It came from some governor who decided to offer a reward for every native killed in the north east, bodies where too heavy, so they went to heads, then decided that since native hair was so unique, that would be fine, and those killers could collect their $25 reward for every scalp.
In the Iroquois confederacy for instance, we had a social system, where people without providers, could collect food and necessities. Our constitution guaranteed the place of equality to women and the elders, and promised the freedom of religion. All this before the u.s. constitution was even thought of. And may I add adopted from ours, and let’s not forget the American emblem, that famous eagle is a copy of the one from the confederacy.
We never said, “Better be dead than white”, they tried to force us to be European but we never gave up. We believed in the peace given to us by the Great Peacemaker; (he was a prophet who counseled peace among the tribes, along with Hiawatha, the traditional founder of the Iroquois Confederacy, a political and cultural union of several tribes residing in the present day state of New York, Ontario, Qu├ębec, Pennsylvania and Ohio). How did we win, well we are still here, even after the atrocities suffered. If we did not believe in peace, like history tries so hard to contradict, would the first Europeans ever have landed or survived.

Where does the mad logic fit in? Well, we have heard that North Korea has tested another more powerful atomic bomb, and the world tries to tell them they cannot do this. And who is telling them this, those who have said weapons. How can one take the high road to sanity, when one is not sane?
You see, history has not changed one bit, when one side considers themselves better than the other, just as they did to us. The world will be a better place when those who call themselves leaders, no longer threaten the very existence of the creation of the Great Spirit, and look to live in peace, with all of Mother Earth’s children. Change we can believe in starts with those who say it. Living by example is always better than imposing ones will on another, without following your own rules. Why can’t they have what you have? No matter how mad it sounds. If one lives in peace without threats, and respect of life, then others will not feel threatened and follow suite, will they not?

And they called us savages.

Have a good day

May you find strength in yesterday's rainfall
Walk openly in tomorows breeze
And appreciate all of today's sun.

Teacher’s aid cuts native boys hair

I have long hair; it represents respect for women, and other things, that is my identity as a native man.
The teacher’s aid took that away from this boy;
I thought residential school behaviour to teach native children how to be like the European was behind us. Obviously, some forgot to tell this person it was not appropriate to do this anymore.
Now how does a person have the right to take someone’s identity away like that? And to make things more insulting, no charges will be bought?
Here is a thought, if the boy had been Jewish, whom I have seen with braids on the sides of their head or Sikh, with their long hair under their turbans, what if someone would cut those, all hell would have broken loose. Some would have mention racial discrimination, or charges under Canada’s racial laws.
The boy only wanted to grow his hair for a traditional native dancing;
I guess we still have a long way to go.

"If the white man wants to live in peace with the Indian, he can live in peace.....Treat all men alike. Give them all the same law. Give them all an even chance to live and grow. All men were made by the same Great Spirit Chief. They are all brothers. The Earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it.......Let me be a free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade....where I choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers, free to think and talk and act for myself, and I will obey every law, or submit to the penalty."

Chief Joseph

A tear and a heartbreak

Seems not to long ago, we where appalled by Sandra Cantu's death, a pretty little girl skipping her way to her friend. Now another child Victoria Stafford has been taken away from us by what can only be described as evil. How else would someone explained this. As I have said before, there is no room for people who listen to evil and commit such crimes. We as adults are here for one reason, it is to care for the young. Every time something like this happens, we die inside a little .

That said, my burning of sweet grass and prayers for this child and her family, may Victoria find peace and happiness in the playgrounds of the Spirit World.

Mother Earth

"If you live on this land,
and you have ancestors sleeping in this land,
I believe that makes you a native to this land.
It has nothing to do with the color of your skin.
I was not raised to look at people racially.
What I was taught is that we're flowers in the Great Spirit's garden.
We share a common root, and the root is Mother Earth."

Climate change

We have seen out west, freezing temperature and snowstorms, in the month of May. In addition, an expedition of scientists tried to go north to study climate change. They tried to measure the ice but could not accomplish this with the equipment they had, the ice was too thick. When they tried to reach the North Pole, they had to be “rescued” by air, the temperature went south, to below -40 c. (Ironic). One would have to say, so much for their understanding of climate change. They have no idea what they are saying or doing.

My point in this, climate change cannot be studied or understood by a simple wave of technology. We have those who push this issue for political reasons, and those who rely too much on their equipments. Climate change has come and gone, Mother Earth has changed with it. The worse thing we can do is look to politicians for answers; some do it for the flavour of the day or for financial reasons. With all do respect, not all are like this but those who try to give a reasonable opinion on the issue are usually pushed aside or ridiculed by those who look at this for advancement.

Everything that has life has a spirit, whether it is animal, plants, people, insect, so on. The first thing to understand about climate change is that Mother Earth has life and a Spirit, and that if we believe she is our property, then we understand nothing. If on the other hand, we accept that we are her children and that she cares for us, then we are taking steps towards reality. If we treat her with respect, not let garbage into the air, on lands, rip forests apart, pollute her rivers, “make wars”, then Mother earth will care for her children. I do not profess to understand everything about the issue, but if someone would do to my house what we do to her, then I would kick him or her out in order to stay healthy.

It is sad to see what is happening, some talk about cleaning the air, but pollute by adding industries in other parts. Others will complain that their economy would suffer too much if they adapt to the changing times, what good is an economy, if there are no more people. Some have passed laws and are been hailed has heroes for it, cars will go further on a litter of gas. However, how many know that the same company create cars for sale in other countries that would never be sold in ours. The emissions of these cars are so horrible that they would not even be accepted in the 80’s, let alone today. So if politicians pass laws, which are applauded here but pollute in other parts of the world, that is called flavour of the day, vote getting, and on…It makes no difference, we have to do it all at once or not at all.

The climate on earth will change, it is inevitable, and it is how we adapt to it that will dictate if we will continue or go towards so many that have gone extinct. If we continue our destructive ways, then we are on the last leg of our civilization. The main problem of climate change is greed, money, profits. Things will not change unless we change. And I have a suspicion that profit will win in the end. To make the necessary sacrifices to create a better world for future generations, we have to take what is ours, and stop depending on the words of those who see profit, before the good of the whole.

What would I do? (If I was a politician, which I am not and nor do I wish to be) First, I would stop trying to make more and more laws, for with every law there is a loophole. A moral understanding is always better than more controlling regulations; people react better to the respect of their intelligence, than laws who forces then to behave a certain way. I would offer the people the reverence they deserve, the understanding that they are as intelligent as I am. I would make the argument that “it is time”. Such a person could make a big difference. It is our choice to make things better or to make it worse; we have the capability to change things for the better.

If politicians would treat people has equals instead of tax paying object that can be manipulated, then people would do what needs to be done. It is the hypocrisy of those who speak but do the opposite in their private lives. Why should one follow those who do not live what they speak? I might not be explaining it in details but you get the general idea. The ruling class, as they like to be known as, are no longer representative of the general public. They are identified as a self-serving group, the self-preservation of ones power, which is why no one takes anything they say, seriously.

In closing;
Those who depend on others, accomplish nothing.
The circle of life will continue, with or without us.

Only when the last tree has been cut down,
Only when the last river has been poisoned,
Only when the last fish has been caught,
Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.
Cree prophecy.
